On September 26th, Friday afternoon, Sean Abernethy was involved in a motorcycle accident on the corner of 17-92 and New York Ave. in Orange City. Only 2 miles away from his home. He was heading home from work when someone turned right in front of him. Unable to stop in time, Sean slammed into the car and was thrown over the car where he landed on his shoulder. Although neither driver was going very fast, Sean suffered extensive injuries: a broken nose, a dislocated shoulder, and a severely broken leg. He was flown by helicopter to Halifax Hospital Trauma Center in Daytona, placed on a ventilator for his breathing and immediately admitted into surgery for his leg, which was broken in 9 different places from his knee down to his ankle. The doctors are still fighting to save his leg to hopefully prevent amputation. He has already had 3 surgeries and doctors are anticipating many more, still not knowing if he will ever get back full function in his leg.

As if his accident was not hard enough for his family to deal with, his wife Sabrina is 9 months pregnant with their 2nd child and has a high risk pregnancy. She is under strict instructions from the doctor not to do anything to increase her risks of going into pre-mature labor. It could be fatal for herself and the baby. If that was not enough, their sweet unborn baby girl has been diagnosed with a rare birth defect called a diaphragmatic hernia. Upon birth, their baby will need immediate medical treatment to stabilize her and then will have to have surgery to correct her condition. Once corrected, she will have to remain in the NICU for what possibly could end up being several weeks to recover. The only hospital in the area that can help give their baby a fighting chance is Winnie Palmer in Orlando. So that is were Sabrina will be having the baby on October 13th, praying that she does not go into labor before that. Due to the accident, Sean will now be unable to be by her side during her delivery and stay thereafter.
Needless to say this family needs your prayers and support. We are calling out to everyone in efforts to help this
family in their time of need. If you can’t make it out to the Charity Poker Run, you can still help this family. The
Community United Methodist Church of DeBary has set up an account in the Abernethy’s name for your donations.
